In Jefferson Pinder’s video and performance work, he uses meditative actions to underscore themes of identity and otherness. Taking cues from physical theatre and laborious actions, his focus on the body reference social aspirations and historical underpinnings associated with the black body.
“THE MAGICAL NEGRO”
with BENJAMIN PERA, APRIL ROY, KEKELI SUMAH, ALEXANDRIA EREGBU, SHON DERVISE, TIM DECILLIS
In this three-ringed spectacle, Pinder will transform the Defibrillator space into a playground for the body and mind. In three distinct heroic exercises, he will embody the role of the most contemporary black trope, the ‘Magical Negro’. In an exchange with the audience, he will demonstrate how durational physical actions can explore the darker side of this complex stereotype. Accompanied by music and narration, this performance will challenge the viewer to understand how both absurd and rational actions can be imbued with racial meaning in context with the use of the black body.
