Pate Conaway (US) is a graduate of Chicago’s Second City Training Center and received his MFA from Columbia College, Chicago (2000). His work often explores the connection between visual art and performance, often applying the principles of one discipline to another. As with improvisation techniques for the stage, Pate looks for inspiration from commonplace objects or everyday situations. After learning to knit, Pate spent five weeks at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago knitting a pair of mittens large enough for him to sleep in.
His work encompasses two-dimensional works, sculpture, installation, and interactive performance.

“Weave” is an evolving installation where materials – wire, rope, garden hose, shrink wrap caution tape, etc. –are transformed into sculptures. My goal is to set up the Electrode window to look much like a mom-and-pop hardware store, where everyday materials are hung on the walls. The artist will then periodically come into the space and weave the materials into sculptures.

This work comes out of being taught to knit and crochet. I use a technique that is something between knitting and crocheting. Instead of knitting needles or a crochet hook, I weave with my fingers. Rather than yarn I choose alternative materials, mostly stuff one would find in a hardware store.

The audience will be those who attending the performance festival, but also those pedestrians which pass by. My experience is that those who pass by the windows will return to see the progress.
